A guide to living with art
Start with what you love. Make space for it.
Choosing art can be a pleasure, not a test. These simple steps will help you move from a first impression to a piece that feels at home.
Notice what makes you pause.
Look at the work before you imagine where it will hang. Is it the light, a familiar place, an expression, or a color? Choose something you’ll enjoy returning to.
If you’re comparing several pieces, consider them in the room’s natural light and beside the colors already around you. A photograph of the room can help you picture the combination.
Give the artwork room to breathe.
Measure the space, then mark the artwork’s listed dimensions with removable tape. Step back and look from the places where you normally sit or stand.
Allow extra space for a mat and frame if you plan to add them. Check whether the listing’s dimensions describe the image, the paper, or the finished framed piece.
Get to know the piece.
Before deciding, look for the information that describes exactly what you’ll receive.
- Original or print: Is this a unique work, a reproduction, or an edition?
- Medium and surface: What is the artwork made with, and what is it printed or painted on?
- Dimensions and framing: What size is it, and is a frame included?
- Edition and signature: Are these mentioned in the description?
- Process: Does the artist disclose digital, AI-assisted, or AI-generated elements?
If a detail matters to your decision and isn’t listed, ask for clarification first.
Keep enjoying it.
Follow the artist’s or printer’s care instructions. As a general starting point, keep paper artwork away from moisture and prolonged direct sunlight, and handle it with clean, dry hands.
A professional framer can help you choose suitable mounting and glazing. Use hanging hardware appropriate to the weight of the finished piece and your wall type.
From the artist to your door.
